Our Story

Alex and Jonathan’s story began in the early summer of 2019 with a match on the dating app Hinge. What began as a simple digital introduction quickly turned into something memorable when they agreed to meet for their first date at Air's Champagne Parlor.

The night ended with a moment that has since become a small piece of relationship lore. Alex confidently paid the bill and informed Jonathan that this meant he now owed her a second date. The move was equal parts charming, strategic, and unmistakably Alex—and Jonathan happily accepted the terms.

From the very beginning, both of them had a quiet suspicion that they had found someone who perfectly fit their type. Jonathan: a 5'8" Jewish contact-sports enthusiast with a competitive spirit and a curious mind. Alex: a 5'2" brunette with glasses, a deep love of art, and a sharp wit. On paper it seemed almost too perfect, but in person the connection felt effortless. What started as curiosity quickly turned into excitement about seeing each other again.

Not long afterward, the relationship took its next step during a group dinner with family Jordan Eichholz and Katya Welch. The evening took place over Greek food at Kiki's, one of downtown Manhattan’s trendiest spots at the time. In a moment that perfectly captured the playful spirit of their relationship, Alex and Jonathan “defined the relationship” with a handshake at the table—right over a plate of lemony potatoes. It was simple, slightly ridiculous, and absolutely perfect.

Over the course of the evening—fueled by two bottles of champagne and a plate of caviar-covered french fries—the two quickly realized they had stumbled into something special. Conversation flowed easily, the laughter came naturally, and the evening stretched on longer than either of them expected.

As the months passed, their relationship continued to deepen. By the time the world changed during the COVID pandemic, Alex and Jonathan found themselves navigating an entirely new chapter together. Moving in together during such an uncertain moment could have been daunting, but for them it became one of the most meaningful milestones in their relationship. It was also when Persimmon—Alex’s kitten at the time—made the move into Jonathan’s apartment. Persimmon quickly charmed her way into Jonathan’s heart, and it wasn’t long before it became clear that she had secured a permanent place in their shared home.

Another defining element of their relationship grew from a shared passion that surprised even them: wine. What started as casual interest gradually evolved into something much more serious. Together they spent countless hours studying, building flashcards, practicing blind tastings, and carefully strategizing study plans. Their apartment often looked more like a classroom than a living room, with bottles lined up for practice and notes scattered across the table.

The process wasn’t always easy. Preparing for wine exams required discipline, patience, and resilience. There were stressful days leading up to exam results, moments of triumph, and occasionally moments of disappointment. Through it all, Alex and Jonathan discovered one of their most important shared love languages: celebrating each other’s wins and supporting each other through challenges. Whether cheering loudly after a successful exam or offering comfort after a difficult one, they approached every moment as a team.

Looking back now, they sometimes laugh at photos from those early years in New York. The two people in those pictures seem almost like younger versions of themselves—excited, curious, and just beginning to discover the life they would build together. Over time, their relationship has been defined by the experiences they have shared: meals enjoyed with friends, bottles of wine opened to mark special occasions (and sometimes ordinary evenings), and long afternoons spent wandering museums and galleries.

As their interests evolved, new traditions naturally found their way into their lives. Kung Fu movies became a favorite genre for cozy evenings at home, and trips to the opera added a sense of occasion to their cultural adventures. Each new interest felt like another thread woven into the fabric of their life together.

One of their favorite traditions began somewhat unexpectedly. When their friends Danielle and Aazan invited them to India for their wedding, Alex decided she wanted to learn Bhangra, the energetic traditional Punjabi dance that often fills wedding dance floors. Determined not to be outshined, Jonathan immediately signed up for dance classes as well. What started as a short-term plan quickly turned into something much more lasting. After two months of classes they arrived at the wedding ready to show off their moves—and, as expected, they shined on the dance floor.

But the classes didn’t stop there. Even after returning from India, Alex and Jonathan continued attending dance lessons every Saturday morning at 10 a.m. More than two years later, the tradition remains one of their favorite weekly rituals: a joyful start to the weekend and another reminder that learning together is one of the things they love most.

The proposal itself was exactly the kind of moment Alex had always imagined. She had never been interested in a grand public proposal—no jumbo-tron moments at Madison Square Garden and certainly no dramatic gestures in the middle of Le Bernardin. Instead, she envisioned something intimate, quiet, and meaningful.

What Jonathan didn’t know, however, was that Alex had accidentally discovered the “hidden” location of the engagement ring while deep cleaning the apartment one day. Naturally, she shared the secret with her closest friends—but carefully kept it from Jonathan, determined not to spoil the surprise. She patiently waited for the right moment, knowing that eventually the day would arrive.

About a month later, it did. The proposal unfolded just as beautifully as Alex had always imagined. The following day, the celebration continued in true New York fashion with an unforgettable martini crawl through some of the city’s most iconic spots: The Polo Bar, Eleven Madison Park, Clemente Bar, and Café Carmellini.

When it came time to choose a place to celebrate their wedding, the answer turned out to be deeply personal. While Alex often seems like a lifelong Upper West Sider, her story actually begins much farther away. She was born in Bucharest, Romania, and much of her mother’s family still calls the country home. Childhood summers spent visiting her grandparents in Bucharest and traveling to her great-grandparents’ home in the countryside near Sighişoara created a lasting connection to Romania’s landscapes and traditions.

When the couple began discussing potential wedding destinations, Alex suggested Romania somewhat tentatively. She wasn’t entirely sure how Jonathan would feel about the idea—or whether it would feel practical for their friends and family. But after a single visit together, the decision quickly became clear.

They fell in love with the mountain town of Sinaia. Nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, the town captures so much of what makes Romania special: natural beauty, historic charm, and a quiet sense of romance. For Alex and Jonathan, it felt like the perfect setting to bring together their two worlds and celebrate with the people they love.

Looking ahead, Alex and Jonathan are most excited about continuing the life they have built together in New York—one filled with curiosity, adventure, and plenty of shared meals. Marriage marks not a beginning but a continuation of the journey they started in 2019: discovering new interests, supporting each other through every challenge, and celebrating every moment worth savoring.
